A city-centered design experience translating space innovation into everyday relevance—“Space in the City 2025” visualized Vienna’s role in making satellite data and geospatial technologies accessible to the public.

Overview

“Space in the City 2025” was an independently curated public exhibition, initiated by Urban Innovation Vienna GmbH (UIV) and the Vienna Geo Spacehub (VGSH) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). The goal was to bring the abstract world of satellites and geodata down to earth—into the city, into people’s lives. As Lead Creative, I was responsible for the overall visual concept and execution, representing the Urban Innovation Vienna GmbH and Vienna Geo Spacehub throughout the project. Event photography was provided by Jakub Hahn and Clemens Schmiedbauer.

The Challenge

The challenge lay in transforming highly technical and scientific content into an engaging, intuitive design experience for a diverse audience. The exhibition needed to highlight the real-world relevance of satellite data—covering topics such as urban climate, mobility, and resilience—while maintaining clarity and emotional impact.

The Solution

As Lead Creative, I restructured the visual identity of the Vienna Geo Spacehub to give it a distinct presence within the ESA-branded festival. While aligning with ESA’s formal design system, I developed a complementary concept that made space-based innovation tangible and inviting. The design combined technical clarity with playful, illustrative elements—communicating complex content in an accessible way. Designer Nierika Bruggaier supported the project with the editorial design of the official info brochure, contributing to the project’s overall coherence. The result was a clear, engaging, and professionally executed exhibition that positioned VGSH as a strong and visible player in geospatial innovation.

The Result

“Space in the City 2025” successfully bridged the gap between space research and urban reality. It positioned the Vienna Geo Spacehub, operated by Urban Innovation Vienna, as a thought leader in the field of applied geodata and spatial communication. The exhibition invited public curiosity and fostered a deeper understanding of how space technology can shape more livable cities—on Earth, for everyone.
