Overview
The Policy Lab is a platform initiated in September 2022 within the City of Vienna, promoted by UIV Urban Innovation Vienna GmbH, to develop and pilot sustainable mobility solutions in collaboration with public sector actors. It enables evidence-based decision-making and bridges barriers in governance using dialogic, participatory processes. As Lead Creative, I designed the visual identity and editorial system that aligned with both institutional formality and innovation-oriented communication.

The Challenge
The challenge was to visually capture the Platform's dual nature: deeply embedded in public governance, yet experimental and forward-looking. The identity needed to be accessible to citizens, clear for policymakers, and flexible across a variety of outputs—from policy briefs and reports to workshop toolkits and event signage. It also had to adhere to City of Vienna visual standards while differentiating the Lab as a sub-brand within the political landscape.
The Solution
Building on the existing visual identity of the Policy Lab, I expanded the brand with a more expressive, editorially driven design approach. My focus was on the development and design of a comprehensive publication that clearly communicated the Lab’s mission, values, and ongoing work in the field of urban mobility innovation. The visual language was enhanced through a warm color palette, modular layout system, and a set of custom illustrations that brought a human and accessible tone to the content. The result was a clearly structured, engaging publication that reflected the Policy Lab’s forward-thinking approach—grounded in governance, but open, experimental, and inviting in tone.
The Result
The publication served as a milestone in the Policy Lab’s external communication—translating complex, interdisciplinary work into a visually structured and accessible format. By thoughtfully extending the existing identity, the design gave the Lab a stronger visual presence and helped articulate its role as a driver of policy innovation in Vienna. The result was a professional and engaging publication that resonated with both institutional stakeholders and the wider public, positioning the Policy Lab as a credible, future-oriented voice in urban mobility transformation.
